Clear Quartz, also known as Rock Crystal was the first substance described as a crystal. "Crystal" came from the Greek word "krustallos" or "crystalos", meaning "permanent ice", because it was believed quartz crystals were ice formed by the gods. Quartz is the worlds most common crystal, consituting more than a tenth of the Earths crust.
