The word "malachite" comes from either the Greek word "malakos" which means soft or from the Greek mellow plant "maloche" which has the same soft, deep green colour in their leaves. Malachite is made up of 60% copper and is often found alongside Azurite and Chrysocolla. Malachite forms in nodules or masses, crystals are rare. Malachite is very soft and absorbent and should be kept separate from harder stones, salts and oils. Malachite is also toxic and should not be taken, if making an elixir, please place the Malachite in a glass jar, then place the jar in the water being used to make the elixir.
Egyptians began the mining of this gemstone around 4000 BC. The ancient Egyptians obtained their Malachite from the Sinai peninsula and used it most often in amulets and statues. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead it is said that the goddess of the sky "drops stars on the earth in the shape of green stones." The stone was used for power by the upper class in Egypt, the head dresses of pharaohs were often lined with malachite, as this was said to raiser the ruler's vibrations to a higher level and open him to wise council. Malachite was ground to a fine powder and Egyptian woman used it as eye makeup to paint their eyelids and eyelashes. (Not recommended as Malachite is toxic)
Once believed to ward off danger, illness, and black magic, malachite was attached to the cradles of infants and made into amulets for children by ancient Greeks.
An ancient Russian legend says anyone who drinks from a goblet made of malachite will have the power to understand the language of the animals bestowed upon him. (Not recommended as Malachite is toxic)
